Best German Game, Best Studio and more: Bavaria’s strong performance at the DCP

What a celebration for the German games industry! On April 13, the German Computer Game Prize DCP was awarded in an online gala. We were cheering for #GamesInBavaria and are excited for all five (and a half) award-winning teams about the important awards that were handed out virtually and will soon be sent out in real life. Read our recap to find out about the winners from Bavaria and how the winners were celebrated on Twitter.

If you missed the live awards ceremony on April 13, you can watch the video of the livestream here at GameStar on YouTube (in German langauge). The gala with host Barbara Schöneberger and entertainer Uke Bosse was viewed around 45,000 times. We were very amused by a small glitch at the end: As Best German Game, the wrong game was included in the credits, but thousands of tweets under the hashtag #DerDCP spread the right message in the very moment when the award was announced.

Yet another thing that made us smile was the tweet by that Toukana’s two-time award-winning title Dorfromantik won in 39 categories… out of 15 categories in which a total of € 790,000 in prize money was awarded among nominees selected from 351 entries.

The Computerspielakademie took the opportunity directly after the award ceremony to raise awareness for the 2nd #GamesPreis, which will be awarded on October 31. Best Family Game: El Hijo – A Wild West Tale

HandyGames from Giebelstadt is the publisher of the Best Family Game 2021, with a prize money of € 80,000. El Hijo – A Wild West Tale is an exciting and non-violent stealth game in spaghetti western style, developed by Honig Studios and Quantumfrog. You take on the role of a 6-year-old boy who goes on an adventure in search of his mother. Along the way, you’ll sneak past the dangers of the Wild West world, gaining more confidence with each challenge you overcome. You can purchase El Hijo here on Steam.

Young Talent Prize – Best Prototyp: Passing By from Hannah Kümmel, Jan Milosch, Marius Mühleck, Ilona Treml

The team of four former and current students at the University of Bayreuth developed the lovingly designed Game Passing By in just one year and won the prototype prize at the DCP. Hannah Kümmel, Jan Milosch, Marius Mühleck and Ilona Treml celebrated the € 50,000 prize money with some fireworks. Passing By is set in a beautiful low-poly world with floating islands and a never-ending west wind. In the prototype, which can be downloaded for free or for a price set by yourself on, you can embark on an unforgettable journey through eight levels with different biomes as the ballooning character Curly, who is tasked with delivering a mysterious letter. Her imaginative journey is inspired by time and transience, as the constant west wind means she can never return and is aging over time. The coherent interplay of different game genres convinced the jury.

Best Innovation and Technology: Holoride

Holoride from Munich has won the € 35,000 prize for Best Innovation and Technology. Holoride transforms vehicles into theme parks, turning everyday journeys into hyper-immersive experiences by combining navigation data and vehicle data with XR.

Holoride wants to revolutionize in-car entertainment and turn the ride into a real experience. To do this, data on the vehicle’s movement is synchronized with the gameplay on VR glasses, with the virtual experience adapting to the car’s current ride. This works amazingly well and not only avoids the simulator sickness that can occur with normal VR games, but equally reduces the motion sickness that often occurs with in-car media reception.

Studio of the Year: Mimimi Games

Making games and crying about it since 2008: You will be greeted by this sentence when you visit the website of Mimimi Games. They had a reason for tears of joy at the DCP, because the studio from Munich prevailed against King Art from Bremen and Ubisoft Düsseldorf in the award for the Studio of the Year, which is rewarded with € 40,000.

Since game design students Dominik Abé and Johannes Roth founded the Munich-based company together in 2008, Mimimi Games has become a force to be reckoned with in the German gaming landscape. In 2016, they proved that the stealth real-time tactics genre is in fact contemporary with the multi-award-winning Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, and shortly thereafter received the German Developer Award for Best Studio. Now, with Desperados III, the studio has delivered another hit among gamers and critics alike. The company’s 28 employees work in a flat hierarchy on a common project, in the success of which they receive a proportionate financial share. Currently, Mimimi is expanding, planning a new IP with the codename “Sweet Potato” for which they will be acting as a publisher for the first time.

Meanwhile, King Art took it with a large portion of humor and congratulated with the words: If tears help, we will adjust our logo in the future.

Bestes German Game: Desperados III by Mimimi Games

The DCP 2021 came to an end with a frenetically celebrated double WOW: Desperados III by Mimimi Games received the award for the Best German Game 2021, defeating strong competitors Cloudpunk (ION Lands) and Iron Harvest (King Art / Koch Media). The jury wrote about Desperados III: The gameplay is dense, the audio design sounds very differentiated, the illustrative graphic style enchants. Desperados III stands for a detailed, mechanically complex and acoustically and visually entrancing game world. The prize for the best game of 2021 is worth € 100,000.

Bestes Mobile Game: Polarized

In addition to the aforementioned five awards, we are also celebrating half an award for Bavaria. Polarized! by TheCodingMonkeys from Frankfurt was named Best Mobile Game 2021 and awarded € 35,000. Responsible for game design and development was Marcel-André Casasola Merkle from Munich (whose pulse also went up noticeably at the announcement), so we count it as half an award for Bavaria.

In Polarized!, players experience an interactive story in which they have to help the protagonist Clara remember the events of a special winter night. The game makes use of the camera function and image recognition of the respective end device to match captured image elements with the objects or situations required in the story in a virtual scavenger hunt.
